Car insurance provides protection in case something goes wrong with the rental car while under your car.  Policies for rental cars may differ from the policy designed for your private road vehicle and this can cause a headache for motorists. To help the confusion, Rentalcars.com has spoken exclusively to Express.co.uk to offer the following advice to get your hire car on the road in a safe and legal manner.

Know the essentials

Hire cars in the UK and Europe will come with various types of protection which will offer motorists the choice between limited cover at a cheap price or paying more to secure a more comprehensive policy.

Collision Damage Waiver

This term will reduce your responsibility to pay for damage to the vehicle's bodywork.

However, RentalCars.com  says motorists will often need to pay some kind of excess fee and may not cover damages to key functions such as the wheels, interior or windows.

The policy does provide some sort of basic protection and means motorists will not be held responsible to pay for expensive repair bills for cosmetic scratches or wear and tear.

Theft Protection

This type of cover means motorists will not need to pay for the rental car if it is stolen or damaged by thieves.

Third-Party liability

This type of cover means your provider will payout to the other road user if a collision causes an injury or damage to property. The type of agreement doesn't cover the price of the rental car but could avoid expensive costs in repair bills.

Read the rules carefully

A rental agreement comes with all new hire cars and provides the terms and conditions of a contract between the provider and the motorist.

Road users could see their policies invalidated if they fail to strictly follow the terms correctly as this could be deemed as a breach of contract.

The rental agreement also provides information about the protection that comes with the car and what charges you may need to pay if something goes wrong with the vehicle.

Find out about added bonuses

If you don't feel like you're covered enough before setting out in a hire car motorists can stock up on a range of extra policy terms.

According to Rentalcars.com claims the most common type of additional protection purchased is the super collision damage waiver.

This further removes you from holding any responsibility for damage to the car and provides cover for issues to parts of the car such as damage to wheels, windows and mirrors.

Insurance can also be purchased before you even pick up the car to cover expenses such as lost keys and towing charges.

For those who regularly hire out vehicles, RentalCars.com suggest buying an annual policy for a more cost-effective approach.

You can dispute charges

Motoring firms will often charge excess payments for damages to a hire car but this can be contested by the motorist.

If you do not think any damage was caused by you, road users can dispute the claim as long as they provide evidence.

RentalCars.com says firms will want copies of check-out and check-in firms which will describe the state of the car at both intervals.

You can protect yourself from unfair charges by simply taking time out to check the hire vehicle before setting off on a trip and taking some photographs.

Going over the ins and outs of a vehicle and studying vital car parts will make you more aware of any changes after the car has been rented out.

After the journey motorists can see how much the vehicle has deteriorated and can work out whether any insurance excess charges are justifiable.

RentalCars also urge motorists to not sign the check-out documents demanding money if they do not believe the claim is justified.

Signing an incorrect check-out document could be an admission that the damage was caused under your watch.
